About Vinodrome

Vinodrome is a new blog concerned with chasing both the ephemeral qualities that make wine great and the great wines which result from these qualities. The wines discussed here are sincere, representative of their origins and, above all, memorable.

Vinodrome supposes that anonymity and insincerity are today’s greatest enemies of the glorious traditions of grape-growing and winemaking.  While it’s not wise to dwell on the negative, the contrast between terroir-driven, varietally correct wines and their unassuming, forgettable counterparts (which have become all too well accepted commercially and critically) is so striking and so clearly delineated that it must be confronted directly and, at times, undiplomatically.

Vinodrome’s Rating Scale

Vinodrome uses a five-star scale to assign ratings to each reviewed wine because the (industry standard) one hundred point scale has a variety of connotations for different people and never quite escapes being viewed as parallel to academic grading standards.  The appraisal of wine (like its appreciation) is so subjective and so imprecise that ratings should never be treated as being very credible.  The evaluation  of wine can be discerning, informed, and experienced, but never objective or absolute.  Each Vinodrome rating takes into consideration a wine’s so-called “varietal correctness,” representative correctness of origin, and price to value ratio.
